About National Mentoring Month

January 2007 marks the sixth annual National Mentoring Month campaign. Its goals are to honor those who have taken the time to mentor young people and to encourage others to do the same under the theme Pass it on. Become a Mentor.

Thank Your Mentor Day™
A key element of National Mentoring Month 2007 will be Thank Your Mentor Day™, celebrated on Thursday, January 25. Millions of Americans will reach out to thank or honor those individuals who have encouraged and guided them. And you can do the same in any or all of the following ways.

Three Ways to Honor Your Mentor
Whether it was a family member, a teacher, a neighbor or a friend, your mentor made a difference in your life. Express your appreciation by…

1. Contacting and thanking your mentor directly.
2. Posting a tribute at www.WhoMentoredYou.org.
3. "Passing it on" by becoming a mentor yourself.

Mentors Do Make a Difference
Research has shown that mentoring can not only help prevent drug abuse and youth violence but greatly improve a young person's prospects for a healthy and productive life. How do mentors play such a vital role? By doing the small things that make a huge difference—like showing youngsters "the ropes" and encouraging them to be everything they're meant to be. Too many kids and teens aren't receiving that kind of support today. Mentoring fills the gap, but more volunteers are needed.

Become a Mentor Yourself
There are lists of young people waiting for mentors in every community. Mentors who will take the time to listen and encourage. Mentors willing to help make a difference a child at a time. Share what you know by becoming a mentor. Find local opportunities at www.mentoring.org.
