Why does Hallmark conduct business with the priority of environmental responsibility? Because part of making a genuine difference in every life, every day is recognizing we share one world—and its resources. We have kept that in mind for decades.
We started recycling paper in the 1940s, launched an employee transportation pool in the 1970s, and since the early 1990s we have reduced our solid waste by 70 percent. (Our Enfield, Conn., facility has operated with zero-waste standards for more than a decade.)
As emphasis on environmental issues has increased in recent years; so has effort at Hallmark. We continue working toward our goal of becoming a carbon-neutral, zero-waste company while creating our products in sustainable ways. Specifically, by 2015, we intend to decrease water and energy usage, and decrease waste, by 25 percent while making Hallmark products significantly more recyclable.
Since 2006, Hallmark has cut more than 34 million pounds from its total waste stream, representing a 48% reduction. The company's carbon footprint has been reduced by 15 percent in four years, and Hallmark North America now buys 99 percent of its total paper from sustainably managed forests.
