In the beginning

Hallmark Hall of Fame was born out of a 1951 memo from Joyce Hall to his national sales force that opened with the line, "Dear Fellows: We're going to try our hand at television." At that time, Hall considered most of the programs on television to be short on quality and intellectual worth. "But we wanted shows that would not only be top entertainment but top quality as well," he said. "We wanted shows that would be appreciated by the entire family, and we wanted people to feel they had benefited from the time spent watching them."

Groundbreaking presentations

Many Hallmark Hall of Fame presentations have been groundbreaking, from Hamlet (1953), the first play by William Shakespeare ever presented on television which was watched by more people than had seen it on stage during the 240 years since it was written, to the fourth production of Amahl and the Night Visitors (1951), which was the first sponsored network show to be broadcast in color. Throughout the years, the movies have tackled tough issues, historical hardships and real-life challenges—from addiction to illness—in an honest, authentic way.

Behind the scenes

Many of the actors who portrayed special education students in the movie A Smile as Big as the Moon (2012) have special needs themselves. Similarly, Love Is Never Silent (1985) featured deaf actors and explored many issues that people in the deaf community face.

Hallmark Hall of Fame has featured many familiar faces since 1951—in fact, one-fourth of all Academy Award winning actors have appeared in a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie.
